Convocation 2015!

Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Jeffrey Kitching addresses Plainville Community Schools' administration, faculty and staff at the school district's Convocation program held at Plainville High School on August 26th.

RAMP Program In Action!

Nearly 100 students are extending learning over the summer through the district's RAMP (Reading and Math Power) Program held at Louis Toffolon Elementary School. The four week program for students in kindergarten through grade 5 focuses on reading, writing and mathematics. In addition, students enjoy an art class that aligns with lessons from the academic areas they are studying.

"Blitz Day" for No Kid Hungry Campaign

A “Blitz Day” was held on June 26, 2015, at the Norton Park Band Shell in Plainville, to kick off the Connecticut No Kid Hungry campaign’s free breakfast and lunch program for Plainville youth 18 years of age or younger. The Connecticut No Kid Hungry campaign is a partnership of End Hunger Connecticut!, Share our Strength®, the Plainville Hunger Action Team and Lieutenant Governor Nancy Wyman, to increase awareness of the summer meals program in Plainville and other locations throughout Connecticut. The Summer Meal Program in Plainville began on Monday, June 22. Meals will be offered Monday-Friday until August 21. Breakfast will be served from 8:45AM-9:45AM; lunch from 11:45AM-1:00PM.

Go Baby Go!

Students from Plainville High School, the Middle School of Plainville and Central Connecticut State University recently came together for the "Go Baby Go" workshop. The students worked for two days to adapt toy cars for local special needs children. The children were fitted for the cars during the workshop in the STEM Lab at the high school.

Energy Conservation Lesson at Linden!

Fifth graders at Linden Street School recently extended their learning about energy conservation with a "hands-on" lesson led by students in Leanne Nolan's Advanced Placement Environmental Science Class at Plainville High School and several volunteers who shared their expertise from General Electric!

PHS Hosts Third Annual "Senior Prom"

Plainville High School's Interact Club recently hosted the third annual "Senior Prom." The prom, for local senior citizens, featured dinner, a DJ and dancing, photo booth and "Paris, France" theme. The Interact Club is sponsored by the Plainville Rotary Club.Student members are encouraged to connect with community leaders, develop leadership skills and give back to the community.

Lemonade War Author Visits Linden

The Linden Street School community recently enjoyed a visit from children’s author Jacqueline Davies. Davies authored several books, including The Lemonade War, which was selected to be the focus of Linden’s “One School-One Book” program this year. The program is designed to create a shared reading experience within a single elementary school community.

Information Showcase!

Parents and community members enjoyed the District Informational Showcase held at Plainville High School on April 15th. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jeffrey Kitching and Assistant Superintendent of Schools Dr. Maureen Brummett provided an overview of district projects and initiatives, and administrators, faculty and staff hosted informational tables on various district related topics including Pre-kindergarten, 21st Century Skills / Common Core, Smarter Balanced Assessments, STEM / Culinary Arts, enVision Math, the College and Career Readiness Center and more. Refreshments were provided by the high school's Culinary Arts program, and piano entertainment was provided by Plainville High School sophomore Dwight Burns.

2015 Memorial Wall of Honor Induction Ceremony

The 2015 Memorial Wall of Honor Induction Ceremony was held at Plainville High School on April 13th. Mr. Walter J. Majsak and Mr. Frank D. Steffany, inductees in memoriam, were honored with the unveiling of plaques in their names on the Memorial Wall of Honor in the high school. The ceremony included comments from Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jeffrey Kitching, Plainville Board of Education Chair Andrea Saunders, Mrs. Catherine Bannell, and Mr. James Majsak, followed by a reception.

Middle School Robotics Program Earns Awards
Students in the Middle School of Plainville's Robotics program recently competed in the first ever Connecticut State VEX IQ Robotics Championship where they captured several awards. The MSP Minionizers team also received the Excellence Award, the highest award presented in VEX IQ Challenge, which qualifies them to participate in the World Championship. 

Valentine Mailboxes!
Students  in the Pre-kindergarten classes at Louis Toffolon Elementary School, together with their parents and family members, recently built and decorated "Valentine Mailboxes" for a Valentine's Day exchange. The project provided a great opportunity to involve parents in the learning process during the school day.

Toffolon Preschoolers Enjoy Animal Expert Visit

Toffolon preschool students in Danielle Phelan's classroom recently had the opportunity to put their Winter Animal Unit of Study into action, thanks to a visit from animal expert Nick Diaz of the Hungerford Nature Park in Kensington, Connecticut. Mr. Diaz provided a demonstration of six animals relevant to a number of books read in the preschool classroom including The Mitten and The Hat by Jan Brett. The students learned about animal habitat, diet and sleep patterns.

+K.I.K. Program!

Plainville Community Schools recently "kicked" off a new peer mentoring program – Positive Kids Influencing Kids (+K.I.K.), bringing students in the middle and high schools together for friendship and fun. The +K.I.K. Program pairs a group of juniors in the high school with eighth grade students at the middle school. The mentor / mentee pairs come together bi-monthly to visit, discuss the transition to high school, and enjoy each other's company.

Expedition New England Comes to PHS!

Connecticut Naturalist Scott Tucker recently visited Plainville High School to discuss native organisms in Connecticut with high school science students. Tucker, who is known for his television program "Expedition New England," has done a number of mini documentaries about various indigenous vertebrates.

Reading Partners Programs Enjoy Holiday Guest Readers

Students and volunteers in the Linden and Toffolon Reading Partners programs recently gathered for holiday reading celebrations featuring guest readers Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jeffrey Kitching at Linden and Assistant Superintendent of Schools Dr. Maureen Brummett at Toffolon. The Plainville VFW Post 574 donated copies of Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner for all of the student participants in both the Linden and Toffolon Reading Partners programs.

PHS "Can the Principal" Event Helps Those In Need

Plainville High School's National Honor Society recently held a "Can Mr. LePage" challenge to collect canned food items and non-perishable goods for the Plainville Community Food Pantry. Principal Steven LePage's office was ultimately filled with four car loads of donated items from students, staff, community members, and collections held in the other four district schools.

Career Day at PHS!
Students at Plainville High School recently participated in the third annual Career Day during which they visited three sessions with speakers from a variety of occupations aligned to student interests. Several of the Career Day speakers were Plainville High School alumni. The event was coordinated by the School Counseling Department and the Student Success Committee led by Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Maureen Brummett.

27th Annual Superintendent's Award Presentation Held

Twelve Plainville students received the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents' (CAPSS) Superintendent / Student Recognition Award and Certificate of Excellence at the 27th annual Superintendent's Award Presentation held on November 6th. This award is given during American Education Week to students who have been nominated by their teachers and chosen by their principal.

College Fair at PHS

Plainville High School hosted a college fair for students on October 24 featuring more than 115 colleges and universities represented at the event.

PHS Homecoming!

The Plainville High School community celebrated Homecoming weekend beginning October 10th with a number of festivities including the "Float Parade," football game against East Catholic High School, and the Homecoming Dance.

New Playscape Unveiled at Wheeler

On September 18th, Frank T. Wheeler Elementary School held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new playscape addition to the playground area. During the ceremony, Principal Batchelder and PTO president Tina Autunno thanked Wheeler parents for their relentless commitment to raising funds for the playscape, as well as Superintendent Kitching and the Plainville Board of Education for their support of the project.

Challenge Accepted!

Linden Street School Principal Paula Eshoo  recently accepted the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and completed the task on the first day of school! At the close of the school day, while Linden students and staff looked on, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jeffrey Kitching poured the icy bucket of water on Principal Eshoo, who then extended the challenge to several colleagues in an effort to support the national  ALS organization.

Ken Fusco Named 2014-15 Teacher of the Year!

Plainville Community Schools has named Plainville High School Science teacher Ken Fusco as the 2014-2015 Teacher of the Year. Fusco was nominated by fellow Plainville High School faculty members. He has been an educator at Plainville High School for 13 years, teaching Biology, Marine Biology, and Oceanography through the UCONN Early College Experience program at the high school. As Teacher of the Year in Plainville, Fusco will also participate as a candidate for Connecticut's 2015 Teacher of the Year Program. Each district Teacher of the Year will be individually recognized at an awards ceremony later this year hosted by the Connecticut Department of Education.

Playing with Polymers

Representatives from the Connecticut Science Center recently presented an after school program for the Preschool students and their families at Linden Street School. The program, which incorporated hands on learning was entitled "Playing with Polymers."

Gene Millerick Honored In Memorium

Eugene Millerick, in memorium, was inducted into the Plainville Community Schools' Memorial Wall of Honor on April 21, for his dedication and volunteer service to the Plainville educational community. During the ceremony, Mr. Millerick's family unveiled the memorial plaque added to the Wall of Honor in Plainville High School. Mr.Millerick served as a member of the Plainville Board of Education for 12 years, also serving as Chair during his tenure on the Board. The Memorial Wall of Honor is a permanent tribute to recognize local individuals for their service to the educational community.

Guest Speaker Shares Marketing Insights with PHS Students

Students in the Plainville High School Marketing 2 Class recently enjoyed a presentation by Director Of Business Development for Loureiro Engineering, Bob Heslin. Mr. Heslin provided students with an overview of branding, core competencies of marketing, the importance of building business relationships and more.

GE Engineers Introduce PHS Students To 3D Printing And Advanced Technologies

Twenty- four Plainville High School students recently visited GE's Industrial Solutions business in Plainville, for a firsthand look at the site's New Product Introduction (NPI) Accelerator Lab and the exciting technologies engineers are using to accelerate product development. Coordinated with Plainville High School's new program "Shadowing for Success," the GE tour was intended to further the program's mission of offering 11th and 12th grade students the opportunity to explore occupations and engage with business professionals.

Plainville Coalition Sponsors Underage Drinking Prevention Campaign

The Plainville Coalition for Positive Youth Development is joining cities and towns around the country by sponsoring a campaign to prevent underage drinking. This effort highlights the fact that it is illegal to allow consumption of alcohol by anyone under age 21, even in private homes. As part of the campaign the Coalition will be displaying lawn signs and other materials around town.

The School Messenger automated messaging system is utilized to directly contact parents who have selected this option, in the event of weather-related closings or delays. In addition, area radio and television stations will broadcast appropriate announcements. These announcements will also be accessible on the Internet at Connecticut Weather Center’s
